We have recently taken up the opportunity to participate in a 12-month campaign with Business Day. The campaign is a focus on the fourth industrial revolution, more commonly referred to as 4IR.
Much has been said about 4IR and indeed, as with all ‘revolutions’, there is a fair amount of fear-mongering happening. At Symbiotics, we do not believe that 4IR is an event, an outcome or a point in time. Nor, for the record, do we believe that it should be yet another trigger for elevated blood pressure. Rather, it is a set of opportunities created as a result of exciting innovations becoming accessible to all businesses.
Anyone who has read Daniel H. Pink’s theories in “A whole new mind” will know that he believes “the future belongs to a different kind of person with a different kind of mind: artists, inventors, storytellers – creative and holistic ‘right-brain’ thinkers whose abilities mark the fault line between who gets ahead and who doesn’t.”
Similarly, we know that technology is useless if not used appropriately and that the value people will bring to 4IR lies in the soft skills that position us as enablers.
In 4IR, we see endless opportunities presented by the mature technologies that can be leveraged by any business, regardless of size or budget.
Where technology was once cumbersome and expensive, and required tremendous in-house knowledge and skill, modern technology allows for anyone with a legitimate idea to flight that idea and reap rewards. Even better, you can test the idea at low cost to see if it will bring the returns you are predicting.
As a business, we have grown on our solid foundation of core values that have provided a base from which to employ and grow the people within the organization. As such, we are a group of like-minded, curious developers. We don’t rush into things. We analyse, we question, we test, and we try out new ideas before we recommend them. We know that our customers benefit tremendously from this approach.
For years, we have run our business in the cloud, learning about the strengths, the pitfalls and the other things ‘they never taught you at business school’. Our experience in this field allowed us to fast-track our clients in this arena, to great success.
We can see that 4IR is taking us closer to a world in which technology is no longer ‘separate’. Technology becomes seamless as user experience improves to a point that it all feels natural. We firmly believe that technology and the application thereof should not outstrip people’s ability to absorb it.
Underpinning all of the above is the ability to understand data and metrics, all of which are useless without correct interpretation. We share the sentiments of W. Edward Deming, Data Scientist, who said “Without data you’re just another person with an opinion”. Isn’t this just another reason to embrace the revolution?
We invite you to put your fears aside, to take a fresh look at the future, and to embrace the opportunities with which we are now presented.
